Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us. It is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Master Mikao Usui (d. 1926).
When a person’s energy is strong and flowing freely, the body and mind are in a positive state of health. However, the vital energy may become weak or blocked, and this may lead to symptoms on a physical or emotional level. There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed. As running water smooths the jagged edges of a rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki restores balance in one’s life.
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is very simple. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes while the therapist channels energy through their hands to the recipient, activating the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. You may feel sensations under the practitioners’ hands or in other parts of your body. You may feel heat, tingling, coolness, throbbing or other sensations. You may feel very little, although many people experience a sense of well-being and relaxation – some even fall asleep. Sometimes a treatment can be energising: there is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.
